There are different kinds of internships that you might encounter. They can vary in scope, needed skill sets, workload, and workplace interactions. The workload also varies depending on the company, team size, and internship program. Some interns handle simple tasks, while others take on whole projects that require teamwork and the interns’ various specializations.
Workplace interaction also differs. Some internships provide close mentorship, while others expect you to learn independently. Depending on the company culture, you may only engage in work-related discussions or become fully immersed in the social culture of the workplace.
Types of Internships
Summer Internships
This is most common as it is usually an academic requirement, spanning their field of study.
Externships
These are short-term programs where interns observe professionals in their work environment while also assisting them. They offer valuable exposure without long-term commitment but are usually unpaid and are rarely encountered by engineering students.
Service Learning
Service learning allows interns to collaborate with organizations to engage in outreach, community service, or charity work. Some opportunities also enable the intern to apply engineering concepts in developing practical solutions to the problems in a community.
