Career Paths

Now that you know yourself better, it’s time to explore where you want to start your career! There are plenty of options, ranging from the corporate field to the academic field. Here’s a guide that can help you choose which career path to take:

Different Career Paths

Engineering Opportunities

Engineers work in diverse fields; including, but not limited to, manufacturing, construction, energy, technology, biotechnology, agriculture, transportation, defense, aerospace, and healthcare. Their roles range from designing systems and equipment to developing innovations that play a critical role in driving global progress.

Corporate

The corporate world is the path most people pursue. More often than not, people in this industry have high and stable compensation; however, corporate jobs often have structured environments and hierarchies, requiring practicality, dependability, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail. Corporate jobs encompass a wide range of industries - from office work to field work - and the culture can vary with each career.

Government / Non-Government Organizations

Government and non-government organizations offer meaningful work that impacts society. These roles tend to be less rigid than corporate jobs depending on the agency, though salaries are often lower.

Volunteer / Non-Profit

Volunteer or non-profit work is another way to work for a cause. The schedule of these kinds of jobs are often more flexible; however, the compensation is minimal.

Entrepreneurship

Does the thought of being your own boss entice you? Entrepreneurship might be the right path. Starting a business requires effort, funding, networking, and research, but it offers high decision-making freedom despite external limitations. If you are creative, competitive, resourceful, and gutsy you may find success in this field.

Graduate School

Maybe you're not yet done being a student; graduate studies are always an option. A Master's Degree or a Doctorate Degree adds credentials to your resume, boosting your credentials and career prospects. Scholarships and grants from organizations like the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and universities can help fund your studies. However, pursuing further studies means extra expenses and forgoing more lucrative full-time positions.

Academe / Research and Development

Teaching and research often go together, with graduate studies playing a key role. Research, driven by government and corporate needs, can be fulfilling and boost your credentials through journal publications, however, difficulties lie in securing funding and local opportunities may be limited.

Vacation

At the end of the day, you don’t have to jump into work or studies right away. Traveling, pursuing new hobbies, thinking about options or simply taking a break can help you gain fresh perspectives before making a career move.

These are just a few career paths, and yours might not fit into any of them and that’s okay! The key is to find something you're truly passionate about. Right now, it might still be unclear where you’re heading, but don't worry. Take your time, explore your options, and you will surely find yourself treading that path.
