Answering Common Questions

Shown below are some of the common questions asked during an interview. In addition to that, there are some tips included in answering these questions.

“Tell me about yourself”

Sample Answer

"I’m a Chemical Engineering graduate from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where I graduated cum laude. I excelled academically, publishing a research paper on the manufacturing process of soap and detergents, which is one of the primary products of this manufacturing company. Throughout college, I was a member of different academic and service organizations. Most notably, I took up a leadership position in UP CAPES, where I was able to develop my project management skills, which is within the scope of responsibilities of the role.."

Tip

Highlight your top experiences, skills, and credentials while maintaining a professional tone. Give the interviewer a strong sense of who you are, but avoid sharing overly personal details. Keep your answers clear, concise, and relevant.

“What is your greatest weakness?”

Sample Answer

"I am very critical of my own work. I prefer increasing planning time rather than accomplishing work right away so that I could spend enough time on other tasks. Although I always finish my work before the deadline, I find that I can easily waste time checking and rechecking it. Because of this, I now make a conscious effort to be intentional in my first review of my work by remaining detail-oriented but mindful of my revisions. This way, I’ve been able to cut my turnaround time by over half the given time period.."

Tip

Focus on the positive and show how you're working to improve your weaknesses. Avoid negative phrases and frame them as "concerns" rather than "problems" rather than "I failed" or "I can't." If mentioning a strength-in-disguise weakness, ensure it doesn’t come off as arrogant or naive.

“Would you rather work with a team or alone?”

Sample Answer

"I enjoy working with a team group brainstorming and collaboration make me highly productive. I also enjoy learning from other people and improving relations with them. But that doesn't mean I cannot work alone as I believe I can learn and discover more of my abilities independently."

Tip

Consider what way of working is needed for the position. You may or may not choose between the two. Just keep in mind to emphasize that you can work well either way and indicate the benefits of both.

“How do you see yourself in five years?”

Sample Answer

"In five years, I can see myself in a managerial role of the team, having contributed to launching the team’s current engagements. I hope to have developed my skills through both company training opportunities and hands-on experience with projects."

Tip

Show enthusiasm for a long-term future with the company, even if you have other career plans. Mentioning plans to leave may make the interviewer hesitant to hire you.
